Sharps Drop Set For September 13

The Marion County Health Department will sponsor its second Sharps Drop-off Day on Saturday, September 13 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the health department, located at 3838 North Rural Street.

Sharps Day was created as a free, safe and convenient manner for those with household sharps to discard their needles, syringes and lancets. "Our first event generated lots of interest and those dropping off their sharps truly appreciated the service we were providing. They asked us to do it again," said event co-coordinator Brandy Robinson.

Those bringing sharps to the health department on September 13 must place all sharps in a sealed, hard plastic container for appropriate disposal.

Coordinated through the health department's Water Quality and Hazardous Materials Management program, Sharp's Day provides an option to limited means for safely discarding household sharps.

"Too often these items end up in the trash, being sent down drains or ending up in the local environment. These pose significant health threats," said Gretchen Quirk, co-coordinator of the Sharps Day event.
