January 29, 2018

(INDIANAPOLIS) – Good dental health starts at a young age, and the Marion County Public Health Department is promoting this by hosting special dental clinics in February during National Children’s Dental Health Month.

The health department’s Dental Services program is offering children-only clinics at four of its dental sites in Marion County.

During the visit, children ages 1 to 18 will receive preventative services, including a dental exam, cleaning, two bitewing x-rays, and a fluoride treatment (age permitting). All fees for the visit are waived for children who are not covered by insurance.

Services on these days are available by appointment or on a walk-in basis. Families should arrive at the clinic no later than 10 a.m.

“Tooth decay is a common health issue with children and is often highly preventable,” said Tonya Stewart, D.D.S., director of Dental Services at the Marion County Public Health Department. “Children should see a dentist by age one, then get regular check-ups. Adults play an important role in establishing healthy dental habits in kids.”

Healthy tips include brushing at least twice a day, flossing daily, eating nutritious foods, limiting the intake of sugary carbonated and acidic drinks, visiting the dentist for regular check-ups and cleanings, and wearing a mouth guard during sports.
