Day Two of Back to School Clinics Successful

The Marion County Health Department vaccinated more than 425 school-aged children during the second day of a week-long series of back to school vaccination clinics being held at the Lafayette Square Mall.

The two-day total for children vaccinated is more than 1,000 .

The first family in line for today's clinic arrived at 10 o�clock, and there were more than 250 people in line prior to the clinic opening at 3 p.m.

Health officials believe there are more than 33,000 students who do not have the required vaccinations.

Local health officials had been concerned about the short-term availability of vaccine to meet the high demand. Working with local, state and federal agencies, the Marion County Health Department has been able to access additional vaccine.

"We strongly encourage parents and guardians of children needing the required vaccinations to come to one of the remaining clinics this week," said Dr. Virginia A. Caine, director, Marion County Health Department. "If parents choose to wait, we could find ourselves in the same situation we are trying to avoid, and that is having large numbers of our children attending school without the appropriate immunizations," said Dr. Caine.

The health department will continue to hold clinics through the end of the week in the former Steve and Berry's location on the east side of the Lafayette Square Mall near the Burlington Coat Factory.

Clinic schedule:

Wednesday, September 22 3 p.m. - 6 p.m.
Thursday, September 23 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.
Friday, September 24 8 a.m. - 11 a.m.
A back to school clinic will also be held at the Lawrence North High School Fieldhouse on Saturday, September 25 from 9 a.m.-Noon.

Those coming to any of the clinics are asked to bring the most recent shot record for their child or a letter from the school indicating what vaccinations are needed.
