More Mosquitoes With West Nile Virus Found In Marion County

The Marion County Public Health Department has documented additional locations of mosquitoes carrying the West Nile Virus in surveillance traps located in Warren and Washington townships. Previous testing has documented mosquitoes carrying the virus in Franklin and Center townships.

These findings are typical for this time of year.

"This information tells us mosquitoes with the virus are active. We know from previous years that now is the time to take steps to eliminate areas of standing water where mosquitoes can lay their eggs and to protect ourselves from bites while outdoors," said Virginia A. Caine, M.D., director, Marion County Public Health Department.

Since 2002, Marion County has experienced five West Nile virus deaths and more than 50 people have become sick with the virus.

In 2010, there were three confirmed human cases and no deaths in Marion County.
