Health Department to Offer Another Tire Recycle Day on Aug. 12
For Immediate Release
August 10, 2017
INDIANAPOLIS – To help reduce the large mosquito population this season, the Marion County Public Health Department is offering a second Tire Recycle Day.
After hosting its annual Tire Recycle Day on June 17, the health department’s Mosquito Control program decided to offer another opportunity for residents to discard old, unused tires.
Marion County residents can get rid of old tires at the health department’s Mosquito Control building, located at 4001 E. 21st St., on Saturday, August 12 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Residents may bring up to six car tires, off the rim, from passenger vehicles only. This event is not for use by tire retailers or auto salvage yards. All tires collected will be recycled.
Tires that sit outside can gather water and become a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes.
“We have seen a large amount of mosquitoes in Marion County this season compared to recent years, “ said Matt Sinsko, coordinator of Mosquito Control at the Marion County Public Health Department. “This is one way residents can pitch in to help reduce the mosquito population in our neighborhoods.”
Sinsko also encourages residents to walk around their home and empty water from containers of any size and flush out bird baths every week. This includes old tires, clogged gutters, small recreational pools, and poorly operating septic systems.
With the presence of West Nile virus in mosquitoes around Marion County, the health department urges everyone to take precautions from bites by following the four Ds of mosquito control:
- DUSK – Stay indoors from dusk until dawn. If you do spend time outdoors….
- DRESS – Wear long sleeves and long pants when outside during these times.
- DEET – Use insect repellent containing DEET.
- DRAINAGE – Remove all standing water outside the home.
