Indianapolis – Smokefree Indy is kicking off the statewide stop-smoking contest, Quit Now Indiana, here in Marion County. The contest encourages Hoosiers who use tobacco to make a quit attempt in October.
Those who remain tobacco-free for the month of October can win cash prizes up to $2,500. To be eligible to win, contestants must be 18 years or older, a legal resident of Indiana, a current tobacco-user and stay tobacco-free from October 1 through October 31, 2012.
Eligible Hoosiers can register online at QuitNow Indiana.com. Employers can request contest materials at QuitNowIndiana.com or call (317) 234-1787. The registration period ends September 30, 2012.
Contest winners will be drawn at random and will be tested to make sure they are tobacco-free. Entrants can get free to quit using tobacco by calling the Indiana Tobacco Quitline, 1-800-QUIT-NOW.
The contest comes at an important time since there are fewer places to smoke with the new local and statewide smoke free air laws in Indiana. “There has never been a better time to quit,” said Katy Ellis, program manager for tobacco control at the Marion County Public Health Department. “Smokefree Indy is ready to help every Hoosier in our county who wants to quit using tobacco,” she said.
