Health Officials Confirm Significant Progress Being Made at Falcon Point Apartments
Marion County Health Department officials are pleased with clean-up and other progress made at the Falcon Point Apartment Complex. Representatives of new property owner Urban Offerings met with local health officials in front of an Administrative Law Judge this morning to share information about the now vacant complex located on the far eastside of Indianapolis damaged during a May 30 tornado.
“In general, the condition of the overall property has improved. A laundry facility has been demolished and related debris removed. Loose bricks and mortar and other building materials have been removed, trees have been trimmed or removed and trash has been cleaned up,” said Doug Payne, a health department housing inspector. He added that all first floor door and window openings have been secured.
The health department has recommended that all structures on the property should be demolished. Last month, five buildings were identified as most in need of removal and the Administrative Law Judge ordered the buildings demolished within 45 days or have the city begin an imposed demolition process. Attorney’s representing Urban Offerings have appealed the demolition order, which is being reviewed by the state.
A spokesman for Urban Offerings says at least $89,000 in clean up has occurred, a perimeter security fence has been repaired and a new security firm has been hired to patrol the grounds.
Representatives of several community groups have met with Urban Offerings officials to discuss concerns with the property.
“The new owners have established a climate of integrity and have exceeded our expectations,” said Pastor James Jackson of Fervent Prayer Church, located near the apartment complex.
By the end of the year Falcon Point owners believe they will have power restored to street lights that they believe will further assist in securing the property.
Another update on the project will take place on January 21.
