Health Department Finds No Well Water Contamination Linked To Train Derailment
Residential water wells located near the January 6 CSX train derailment site have not been impacted by materials spilled during the train accident.
Independent water sampling and testing conducted by the Marion County Health Department and a contractor hired by CSX indicate no infiltration of materials associated with the train derailment. Marion County Health Department samples were tested and analyzed by the Indiana State Department of Health.
“When compared, the two test results mirror one another and the message is that all of the wells tested indicate they are safe to use,” said Virginia A. Caine, director, Marion County Health Department.
34 wells were tested. Most were in an area considered at risk for potential contaminations. Several other wells, not located in the target area, were tested after concerned individuals requested the free testing. The Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library Wayne Branch, located at 198 South Girls School Road, had its water tested, even though it is on city water service.
Health department officials contacted local residents with the water sampling results and answered any questions. A detailed testing report will be mailed to those residents, too.
Although health officials do not believe there is any future risk to the water wells, precautionary follow up testing will likely take place later in the year. Anyone wanting to have their water well tested can contact the health department at 221-2266 to make sampling arrangements.
