Free Depression Screenings Offered in Marion County During October

INDIANAPOLIS – Clinical depression is a common illness affecting more than 19 million adults every year in the United States from different races and socio-economic backgrounds.
As part of an effort to educate and screen for depression, the Marion County Public Health Department’s Social Work department will participate in community health fairs as well as specific outreach to African- American men at local barbershops during the month of October.
The Marion County Public Health Department will offer free depression screenings in October at these times and locations:
- Tuesday, Oct. 13, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Ivy Tech Health Fair, 9301 E. 59th St., (Lawrence)
- Wednesday, Oct. 14, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Ivy Tech Health Fair, 2535 N. Capitol Ave.
- Wednesday, Oct. 21, 1-4 p.m., CAFE, 8902 E. 38th St.
- Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2-6 p.m., ACTION Health Center, 2868 N. Pennsylvania St.
- Thursday, Oct. 22, 1-4:30 p.m., Kenny’s Academy of Barbering, 2150 Lafayette Rd.
- Friday, Oct. 23, 1-4:30 p.m., Kenny’s Academy of Barbering, 3741 N. Sherman Dr.
- Friday, Oct. 30, 1-4:30 p.m. Kenny’s Academy of Barbering, 5670 Caito Dr., Suite 101
Screenings are often the first step in getting help. People suffering from depression often experience some of these key symptoms:
- A persistent sad, anxious or “empty” mood
- Sleeping too little, sleeping too much or early morning awakening
- Reduced appetite and weight loss, or increased appetite and weight gain
- Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed
- Restlessness or irritability
- Difficulty concentrating, remembering or making decisions
- Fatigue or loss of energy
- Thoughts of death or suicide
Depression screenings cannot provide a clinical diagnosis. Those who feel they may be depressed, or currently experience five or more of the above symptoms, should contact their primary care physician or a mental health professional.
