Hand Washing Important Part of Fair Visit

The Marion County Fair celebrates its 80th anniversary this year and the Marion County Health Department will be on-hand inspecting the more than 50 food vendors To ensure everyone eating at the fair can do so with confidence.
“Food and the fair naturally go together and we encourage our residents to support the fair. We have just one request-make sure to wash your hands often,” said Virginia A. Caine, M.D., director, Marion County Health Department.
“Along with the food, being able to touch and experience a variety of animals, handmade items and rides mean our hands come in contact with many different surfaces. This makes hand washing critical,” said Dr. Caine.
Hands should be washed immediately after coming in contact with any animals. Hands also need to be washed prior to eating or having contact with food.
“The fair has public restrooms available and I also recommend individuals take hand sanitizer with them to ensure hands remain clean throughout the fair visit,” added Dr. Caine.
Health department food inspectors will be at the fairgrounds making certain food handlers are following food codes and guidelines. Those visiting the fair should also know that not all food vendors are required to have a food license.
“Under Indiana law, church groups are not required to have a food license. Also, fraternal, civic and veteran’s groups are allowed to have 15 fundraisers annually that are not subject to inspection,” said Dr. Caine.
Other food providers, including those associated with the carnival, are required to have a food license and will be inspected multiple times during the 10-day event.
The 80th Marion County Fair continues from July 22-31 at the fairgrounds, 7300 East Troy Avenue.
