Health Department Urges Caution for Those Interacting with Floodwater Aftermath
Marion County residents affected by flooding can contact the Marion County Health Department for free information on safe clean-up practices. The health department will also provide free well water testing for those who have experienced flooding and use well water.
Floodwater contains a number of contaminants that can create potential health hazards. E-coli, Shigella, norovirus and other diarrhea illnesses can result from ingestion of floodwater.
Those who must work in floodwater should protect themselves as best as possible. Any breaks in the skin should be covered to avoid infection. Also, individuals in flood conditions should use extreme caution to avoid accidental injuries. The risk for tetanus is also increased in flood situations since visibility is often obscured.
After any contact with floodwater, individuals should wash their hands and any other areas that have come in contact with the polluted water.
