One of the largest back-to-school events in Indianapolis will take place Saturday, August 4 for the Covering Kids and Families Back-to-School Family Day. The annual event drew more than 15,000 people last year.

The event will be held on the grounds of the Marion County Public Health Department, 3838 North Rural Street from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

This popular event will offer free school supplies, back to school immunizations, sports physicals and dental and visual screenings, along with 70 community agencies providing games and information. Those needing immunizations should bring current shot records, insurance or Medicaid card. Two new features this year will be an “Ask-a-Doc” booth allowing those in attendance to ask doctors about health concerns and Echocardiograms to the first 40 children 14 and up.

Free birth certificates will be offered for the first 100 children under the age of 19. After that the cost will be $10 per certificate.

Those attending will also have the opportunity to learn about and to enroll in Hoosier Healthwise, Health Advantage or Healthy Indiana Plan. Please bring income stubs from the last three months, Social Security Number and proof of Marion County residency.

“What makes this event successful is the support we receive from all of the community agencies that support us. Our sponsors, volunteers and the general public contribute to making this a very special day,” said Pamela Humes, director of the Covering Kids and Families program in Central Indiana.

Sponsors for the Covering Kids & Families Back-to-School event include Health & Hospital Corporation, Marion County Public Health Department, WISH TV Channel 8, Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital, Managed Health Services, Safeway, MDwise, Wishard Health Services, the Indianapolis Fire Department and John Stewart Foundation.
