(INDIANAPOLIS) – Legacy House in Indianapolis received a $1,000 grant from the Indiana First Lady’s Charitable Foundation during a ceremony today at the Governor’s Residence. First Lady Karen Pence awarded $15,000 to 19 organizations and charities that serve Hoosier families and children across the state.

Legacy House is a nonprofit agency established in 2001 to provide counseling and advocacy to victims of violence. The funding provided by the grant will support the agency’s art therapy program.

“Legacy House is one of those organizations that is doing great work for our Hoosier children and families, and it is an honor to recognize them today,” said First Lady Karen Pence.

Nearly 80 percent of Legacy House clients are underserved, and more than one-third are children. All services provided by Legacy House are free, and it relies on the generous support of grants and donors to maintain services and programming.

“A trauma victim will have many needs that cannot be addressed without support from trained professionals,” said Michael Hurst, executive director of Legacy House. “This generous grant from the Indiana First Lady’s Charitable Foundation will help counselors at Legacy House use art therapy as one of many tools in the healing process.”

Legacy House provides help for clients who have experienced trauma caused by criminal violence such as homicide and sexual assault; and catastrophic events including explosions, fire and suicide. Programs are designed to help clients move from victim to survivor to thriver.
