Local Memorial Service Part of National Day of Remembrance on Sept. 25

INDIANAPOLIS – Every day, someone grieves the loss of a loved one to homicide. On September 25, people in communities throughout the country will gather in parks, churches and other venues for the National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims. This is a special time to remember family members, friends and neighbors who lost their lives to homicide this past year.
A memorial service will be held in Indianapolis at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 25 at the St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church, 4050 East 38th Street. The service is sponsored by The Church Federation of Greater Indianapolis, Victim Assistance Unit of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Survivors of Violent Death Support Group, and Legacy House.
“We might hear about a murder on the news, but life will go on as usual for most of us,” said Michael Hurst, executive director of Legacy House. “For family members left behind, they will always carry the burden of their loss. This service is meant to support and embrace those in our community who are hurting.”
The Day of Remembrance service will have a time of sharing from the mother of a homicide victim. The service will also include a candle lighting ceremony and a reading of the names, remembering those who were victims of homicide in Indianapolis during the past 12 months.
