Marion County Reports First Human Case of West Nile Virus for 2011

The Marion County Public Health Department has confirmed the first human case of West Nile virus for 2011.
In 2010, there were three confirmed human cases and no deaths in Marion County.
Since 2002, Marion County has experienced five West Nile virus deaths and more than 50 people have become sick with the virus.
“This is a reminder that West Nile virus is active in our community and we need our residents to do all they can to eliminate potential breeding grounds and to protect themselves from mosquito bites,” said Dr. Virginia A. Caine, director, Marion County Public Health Department.
Local health officials ask all residents to take a walk around where they live, play and work to identify containers capable of holding water. These containers should be cleaned regularly, covered or put indoors. Mosquitoes require very little water to lay their eggs.
Those going outside, especially in the early evening, should wear long-sleeve shirts, long pants and use a repellent with the ingredient D.E.E.T.
Mosquito season continues until the first hard frost of the season, generally in mid-October.
