Third Week of Hot Conditions Challenges County Residents to Protect Themselves from Related Illness

An additional 36 individuals sought heat related treatment at Indianapolis hospital emergency departments July 29 through July 31, bringing the total number of patients to 170 since July 18.
The age breakdown for heat related illness emergency department patients:
- 0-4 years 12 total patients
- 5-17 years 27 total patients
- 18-64 years 93 total patients
- 65 and older 38 total patients
The National Weather Service is predicting temperatures in the 90s through most of this week. The heat index on Tuesday is predicted to be near 103 degrees.
Those who must be outside should take frequent breaks in a cooled environment, drink plenty of water and be alert for signs of heat related illness. These symptoms include:
- Fatigue
- Nausea
- Headaches
- Muscle aches and cramps
- Weakness
- Confusion or anxiety
- Drenching sweats, often accompanied by cold, clammy skin
- Slowed or weakened heartbeat
- Dizziness
- Fainting
- Agitation
“The heat is dangerous. We are concerned that as our students return to school, as high school football practice continues that more individuals will be exposed to increased risk for heat related illness. We simply urge caution to ensure no one becomes sick,” said Virginia A. Caine, M.D., director, Marion County Public Health Department
