Downtown Rocking Chair Event Will Raise Awareness and Funds For Those Affected By Violence
Already this year, more than 20 murders have taken place in Indianapolis. Some type of violence affects more than 15,000 Indianapolis residents annually. Because of the impact violence has on our community, central Indiana residents are encouraged to support National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, April 13-19, by participating in the Legacy House R.O.C.C.-Thon. The Reaching Out to Citizens Affected by Crime (R.O.C.C.) event is April 17th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis.
Participants collect donations prior to the event and then rock in rocking chairs while being entertained by great music, celebrity rockers, snacks and beverages. Participants will receive a R.O.C.C.-A-Thon commemorative t-shirt and have an opportunity to learn more about Marion County victim service providers.
Proceeds from the event support Legacy House, which offers free counseling and support services to adults and children affected by all types of violence including homicide, child abuse, domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, robbery and burglary.
Legacy House opened in 2001 and has continued to see an unprecedented demand for its services. In 2007, Legacy House served more than 2,500 individuals, and has already seen more than 300 new clients this year. More than one-third of Legacy House clients are children.
