Local Events to Recognize National Crime Victims’ Rights Week

INDIANAPOLIS – National Crime Victims’ Rights Week is observed each year as a way to create more public awareness of – and knowledge about – the wide range of rights and services available to people who have been victimized by crime. The theme for National Crime Victims’ Right Week in 2015, which runs April 19-25, is “Engaging Communities, Empowering Victims.”
Legacy House, a counseling center in Indianapolis that offers free services to victims and families, is partnering with community groups to support events during the week to raise awareness of rights and services available to victims of criminal violence.
Partners include the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department’s Victim Assistance Unit, the Survivors of Violent Death Support Group, the Domestic Violence Network, and the Marion County Centers of Hope. Special thanks to The Indianapolis Public Library for hosting two of the events.

Tuesday, April 21
10:15 a.m.
Exhibit Opening and Preview Victims of Homicide Memorial
The Indianapolis Public Library – Central Library Atrium 40 E. Saint Clair St.
This exhibit gives special honor to the 135 victims of criminal homicide in Indianapolis in 2014. The exhibit will open on April 21 at 10:15 a.m. with a short program featuring several family members who lost someone to homicide.

Sexual Assault Forum
The Indianapolis Public Library – Central Library Auditorium
40 E. Saint Clair St.
Be part of a public forum on how sexual assault is portrayed in the media and how those portrayals change attitudes and beliefs about sexual assault and the victims of that violence.
Thursday, April 23
10 a.m.–2 p.m.
11th Annual ROCC-a-Thon
Monument Circle (South Quadrant)
ROCC-a-Thon features music, giveaways and guest speakers. More importantly, local victim services and advocacy organizations will be there to share information about their services.
Saturday, April 25

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes Wood Plaza Fountain,
IUPUI 815 W. New York St.
Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is a one-mile march to raise awareness about sexual and gender violence in our community. Men are asked to walk the mile in a pair of women’s high heels. Participants are asked to work together to be an active voice for engage voice for bringing an end to sexual assault and gender violence in our community.
