The Marion County Public Health Department will hold its annual community flu clinics from now through October 27.
“We recommend those ages 6 months and older receive a flu shot. The flu vaccine is especially important for women who are pregnant, children under 5 (and especially those 2 and younger), those 50 and older, those in nursing homes or long term care facilities and those who live with or care for someone who may be at risk from flu complications,” said Virginia A. Caine, M.D., director, Marion County Public Health Department.
The health department will offer the regular flu shot for those 6 months and older and the high dose flu vaccine approved for those 65 and older. The nasal spray vaccine will be available for healthy people ages 2 through 49, except for women who are pregnant.
“Flu is highly contagious and it is important for individual, family and community health that as many of our residents as possible be vaccinated,” said Dr. Caine.
The flu vaccine generally takes two weeks to provide full protection, so now is the time to be vaccinated. In Marion County, flu season can last from now through late April.
Influenza vaccines are $15; pneumonia vaccines are $40 and vaccinations for children under two years old are free. Medicare and Medicaid will be accepted.
