Mosquitoes with the West Nile Virus Found in Washington Township
The Marion County Health Department has confirmed a third sample of mosquitoes with the West Nile virus, this time in Washington Township. The first positive samples came from Lawrence Township and Wayne Township.
The health department has surveillance sites throughout the county that trap mosquitoes for testing. These tests help determine the population density and characteristics of mosquitoes.
While mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus have been confirmed in Lawrence, Wayne and Washington Townships, local health officials say infected mosquitoes are likely active in all parts of the county.
The testing results provide a reminder to area residents to take precautions to lower the risk of mosquito bites. These precautions include using repellent and wearing long sleeved shirts and long pants when outside around sunset, the time mosquitoes are most active. Other steps include cleaning, covering or placing inside any containers capable of holding water. Mosquitoes have been able to lay eggs in as little as two tablespoons of water inside a discarded Styrofoam coffee cup.
